David Dawson
David Dawson, a veteran with an unshakable heart, grew up in Brooklyn, New York, with a calling to serve. In 2010, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, dedicating eight years of his life to protecting others. He faced not only the weight of combat operations in Afghanistan but also the personal cost, sustaining injuries that would forever change him. Through the pain and the trauma, David held fast to the Marine Corps’ ethos of “no one left behind.” It wasn’t just a motto for him—it was his lifeline, a guiding force through the darkest moments.
Returning home was another battle. Yet, despite his struggles, David pushed forward, earning his Bachelor of Science degree while overcoming the emotional scars left by war. Working at NADAP, a New York non-profit focused on healthcare and job placement, he witnessed firsthand the devastation of substance abuse and suicide among fellow veterans. Watching his comrades fall, David knew he couldn’t just stand by—he had to do more.
Fueled by these heartbreaking losses and a relentless passion for helping others, David co-founded Care Star Recovery & Wellness. The program offers life-saving support to veterans and everyday individuals battling mental health and addiction. For David, this work is personal. He believes no one should ever face their struggles alone, a belief rooted deeply in the brotherhood he felt in the military.
David’s story is about strength and kindness, even when life has been tough. He shows how people can rise up, no matter how hard things get. Through his hard work, David has become a symbol of hope, proving that even in the darkest times, we can find and share light with others.
